Play it safe
Roulette as we know it has undergone something of a revolution. I know it is cliche to talk about revolutions this, revolutions that. But, frankly speaking, there is no better word to use when it comes to the progressions of roulette.
I have been in the online casino industry for quite some time now. I started at the bottom, more known as customer support, and have since worked my way up the ladder. Over the last few years I was lucky enough (lucky, get it?) to get a trial position within product development at one of the bigger online casino game developers. My area of responsibilities is the game of roulette.
As much as roulette is still played in its same fashion as it was three hundred years ago, you will quickly notice at any live casino how the air and grandeur of the game has somewhat vanished. You will rarely see a full table of high stakes roulette running, barely even in Las Vegas. The high stakes games are reserved for other games. Roulette simply doesn’t have the same appeal to today’s rich and famous as it did in its Monte Carlo late 1800s heydays.
That doesn’t mean roulette by any stretch still isn’t just as popular. It is. It just attracts a somewhat different crowd. And not only that, it is played differently and with a entirely different approach. That’s where I come into the picture.
Being responsible for bringing out the best of roulette, not only in Canada but in the world as a whole, my first line of business is to figure out what people want, and how I can give it to them.
With today’s digital speed, people live faster lives. They are less patient than they used to be. Hence, a traditional game of roulette, at which any one single round may take as long as 4-5 minutes including complex payout combinations, and some times even more than that (I am sure you have seen multiple piles of chips of different bettors literally crowding a winning number … Well, I’ve got news for you – those take time to get right).
The average round of live roulette, including bets, the spin and payouts, takes between 3-4 minutes depending on how seasoned the dealer is. In an age when people get frustrated when a website takes more than three seconds to load, there is little patience left to wait around for a single spin of roulette – let a lone an entire session. Add to the equation a player who suffers from a losing session, and that patience and player experience goes through the floor rather immediately.
In this sense, you can thank your lucky star for the internet and how it has enabled to save an otherwise sinking roulette ship. As the payout is the one complex and time consuming part of roulette, online roulette has solved that very problem. All of a sudden, winning bets are paid out in the breath of a moment. No more useless waiting around for other people’s winning bets to be paid out (for sure enough, whenever you are the lucky winner your patience tends to shoot up exponentially, doesn’t it?).
But faster payouts is not enough. On one hand, online roulette has taken the mystery out of the classical live version of the game. But it is one of those “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” type of instances. This is why an entirely new direction is called for.
So far the best online casinos around have adapted to this trend. For no one wants to give up on a grand classic. So what better way then but to turn roulette into a strong survival of the fittest? Darwin style.
The most popular roulette adaptations of today are Lightning Roulette (made by Evolution, and Speed Roulette. There is also Double Ball Roulette. All of these have found their devoted crowd. And we’re talking big crowds. But there are several other just as brilliant roulette 3.0 versions out there, up for grabs for any roulette fan around. And more is coming. I personally work incessantly on a couple of new very fast-paced roulette versions that I believe will be revolutionary. Of course, it is still work in progress and industry secrets, so I cannot reveal any more than that. But keep your eyes open in the upcoming year, for you might find yourself another roulette favorite that will last for a hundred years.
The brilliant thing about roulette is that the very basics of the game are timeless and time tested. Whatever additions or alterations you make, as long as they don’t compromise the very core of the game, there are unlimited opportunities to give roulette enthusiasts what they want, and to ensure the longevity of this grand old darling.
